Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is the best beach day imaginable. Disney Castaway Cay is of course amazing as well; however, Disney added many upgrades and recreational offerings that allows beach-goers and non-beach-goers to all have the best Bahamian port day at Disney Lookout Cay! If you are interested in enjoying this island, Royal Carriage Vacation travel agents will provide you with free travel planning services and gift you onboard credit to use for your sailing as well as assist you with selecting a sailing and stateroom that matches your travel preferences and travel party needs. We were fortunate to be on Disney’s original ship, Disney Magic, on a Lookout Cay preview sailing to be the first guests to enjoy the island for this historic moment! Disney also marked the occasion with a beautiful lithograph and special note.
The journey began with exiting the ship at a port dock that is connected by a path to the island’s tram stop, Mabrika Cove Tram Stop. We used our MagicBand+ from our Walt Disney World trip and used them as DisneyBand+ for our Disney Cruise Line vacation seamlessly. We were able to easily scan our bands to exit and enter the ship. Please note the adults will still need a form of ID in addition to the DisneyBand+. If you do not have DisneyBand+, you can use your Key to the World stateroom key card to enter and exit the ship with your ID.
We easily boarded the tram while listening to entertaining and interesting facts about the island as we enjoyed a 7 minute tram ride to the Lookout Cay tram stop, Goombay Cultural Center Tram Stop. Please note that the doors to the tram are somewhat narrow to enter. They also had some guests being transported via golf carts from the ship to the Goombay Cultural Center Tram Stop as well. The golf cart transportation would need to be arranged with guest services. Majority of guests will enjoy the tram transportation.
Once at Lookout Cay, there are crew members handing out towels. It is easiest to grab your towels immediately upon exiting the tram. There are also complimentary wagons and strollers available for use and Guest Services as well as First Aid are in the building closest to the Goombay Cultural Center Tram Stop as well.
For guests that enjoy the beach, there are many loungers and chairs that extend much further than the Castaway Cay you are used to. (Disney’s other private island). There were plenty of seats, some that were in rows of two along the beach close to the water, and there was another tier higher up closer to the Goombay Cultural Center, restrooms, and dining options for sunbathers.
For those that would like to snorkel, you can pick up your gear for $38 per person that includes snorkel googles and mouthpiece, fins, and life vest. Snorkeling is reserved for guests ages 10 and older. They plan to add statues under the water similar to the experience at Castaway Cay, but they currently were not added for the preview sailing and crew members shared that there isn’t a set date for the statues to be added and completed for guests at the time of this article. we will certainly be looking forward to that addition! A difference from Castaway Cay snorkeling, which funnels snorkelers into a designated area of the beach and water, is that Lookout Cay snorkelers are able to snorkel anywhere on they want as long as they don’t go past the white buoys. It will be interesting to see if this changes once they add the statues and there may be a designated snorkel area in the future or if they will continue to allow free reign for snorkelers.
Serenity Bay for guests over 18 is at the far side of the island (further to the left upon exiting the tram stop and walking towards the beach). There are evening Serenity Bay Cabanas in that section as well. There wasn’t signage for Serenity Bay along the beach but one of the Lifeguards is posted there to remind anyway walking that way with kiddos that the section of the beach is reserved for guests over 18. Cabanas can be reserved in advance and are usually sold out quickly. To give yourself the best chance possible, Royal Carriage Vacations travel agents reserve your port adventure and onboard activities as well as Cabanas for you as part of our free travel planning services.
Families can also enjoy cabanas as well!
There were also bars throughout the Island as well as a Smoothie Bar.
A wonderful change to Lookout Cay when compared to Castaway Cay is the layout allows everyone along the beach to be close to restrooms at all times as well as three different dining options. True True BBQ, True True BBQ Too, and an additional BBQ option within Serenity Bay. They serve the same delicious fare with plenty of options of all tastes. If you need special dietary accommodations or have allergies, you will be able to arrange your meal order with your dining team the evening before enjoying Lookout Cay at dinner (the same procedure goes for Castaway Cay as well). If you have allergies or dietary restrictions, Royal Carriage Vacations travel agents will be able to add notes to your reservation as well as provide helpful guidance on how to navigate best practices while on the ship to ensure everyone can have a safe and magical vacation!
Another wonderful change at Lookout Cay when compared to Castaway Cay was the amble seating for lunch. The octagon tables fit the uniquely trays perfectly and there were 8 sections for the family BBQ dining areas to choose from providing a seat for the lunch rush for all.
For children on the island, there are so many paths to fun! Children are able to check into the Kids Club on the island and enjoy a fun splash zone as well as activities with Oceaneer Labs counselors supervising them. There is also a splash playground, Rush Out Gush Out Water Play, that is open to guests under the age of 12 and must have adult supervision.
Kids can also enjoy island activities and games with their families at the Play Play Pavilion! They have crew members providing guidance for some games and activities and other recreation is free play. They also have the Disney Fun in the Sun Beach Bash around 1PM on Lookout Cay days that the Play Play Pavilion (check your Disney Navigator App for your specific cruise time offerings) that is held in the Play Play Pavilion where Disney friends enjoy games that incorporate guests’ favorite Disney songs.
For all guests there is a musical procession, called RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration at Disney Lookout Cay, which will culminate in the Goombay Cultural Center with musical and dancing and all of your favorite Disney characters. The costume for the celebration were designed by Theodore Elyett Sealy, who is a Disney Live Entertainment and Celebrity Fashion Designer.
For guests that aren’t as into the beach experience as others, there are so many options to enjoy while on the island! The nature trail is a must for hikers and adventurers. The trail is found on the farther walkway to the right after you exit the tram and walk towards the beach, you will want to continue right. The nature trail starts off paved but is a sand trail for majority of the 10 minutes in and 10 minutes out trail.
Strollers may be difficult to use on this path and wagons may be more doable than strollers but still you will be met with the sand resistance. They didn’t have the water stations filled yet for the preview but they plan to have several stations set up throughout the walk as shown here.
The path will come to a fork and if you keep right the trail will lead you to Lighthouse Point and if you keep left you will enjoy amazing views of serene, uncrowded beach area that is picturesque. Please note that there is a warning sign stating that there is no lifeguard on duty at this section of the beach and that there is hard coral at the bottom of this section. Though a nice walk along the beach and enjoy the views made this trip worth the additional trek.
Throughout the walk on both sides of the trail, there are fascinating notes about the flora and fauna of the island as you make your way to the climax of the journey, Lighthouse Point, for what the island was named for. There are also QR code signs to scan with your phone for more fun facts as part of a self-paced scavenger hunt throughout the island.
Aside from the nature trail, there are several port adventures available for guests to enjoy some of which include guided tours and cave experiences. Your Royal Carriage Vacations travel agent can assist you with selecting the best adventures for you at this port and others on your sailing as well as secure them for you as part of our free travel planning services.
You are also able to purchase unique Lookout Cay jerseys, backpacks, and other specialty merchandise while on the island! T’ings has sand buckets (the sand has pink tinted specks in it and has the consistency somewhere between Kinetic sand and actual sand that is tactilely pleasing for all ages), shirts, jersey, dresses, and so much more! Treasure of Eleuthera has beautiful paintings, personalized purses, jewelry and more!
All in all between the convenient and comfortable layout of the island and the abundance of recreations, beach, and entertainment offers, I highly recommend enjoying a Disney Cruise Line vacation that stops at Lookout Cay!
